january 10 has come again

Posted in: twins

My babies turn one today.  One.

And if I’m being honest, I’m terribly terribly sad about it.  One means toddler, one does not mean baby.  One means I don’t have babies anymore.  I really, really want to keep my babies, babies.  Really really.  I know this is what happens and that I should be excited for them and all that lies ahead with this next year.  And I am.  Really.  I just want it to slow down.  Like a lot.

For the last week month whenever I’ve gone in to check on them one last time I’ve done it a little lot louder than usual.  Normally I’m a pro at opening doors without making a sound but for the last month I’ve made every effort to make as much noise as possible.  I want them to stir.  I want them to wipe their sleepy eyes and raise their arms above their head in habit to reach for me.  Just for a minute or two.  To feel their warm, soft, snuggly selves give into the safety and comfort of my arms.  Their heads rest easily in the nape of my neck.  Princess B patting my back in sync with my pats on hers.  Princess A drumming the fingers of one hand and searching my face for a lip to tug with the other.  Sigh.

I will celebrate with them this weekend and bombard you with all the pieces that made the puzzle.

But for today let’s reminisce.

I told you what it was like the day that blonde technician announced with the normal-this-happens-all-the-time voice “there’s two in there.”

In preparation for a talk I was giving to other expectant Mothers of Multiples I answered a 20 question survey in two parts.

I enlightened you on what it was like to be asked “are they twins?” every. single. time. you go somewhere.  Which included the all-time hysterical video!

I gave into the calling of the baby and ignored things like my to-do list and enjoyed the rain against the windows instead.

Some of my favorite photo posts involved them at 11 months(ing!), loving themselves in the mirror, enjoying their first swim at the pool, and making me very, very nervous.

Happy birthday my beautiful baby girls.  You have no idea.  None at all.

I am sure they have a lot in store for you. Hang in there momma. They are growing up!!! Just think they are going to really be moving soon and then the fun will really start. Happy belated birthday, girls! Gosh, they’re adorable, Jamie. You know, everyone tells you this: even though one stage is passed and you will miss it, the next stage is just as wonderful in it’s own way. And, it’s true. I can’t believe my little guy will be going to Kindergarten next year! I will miss him being small enough to carry around, his whole body wrapped around me, but I look so forward to more of the funny things he will say, his wit, his smile, the caring boy he is turning out to be. Happy journey to you, mama of one-year-olds!

You are so right, it does get better and better! But having my 5 and 3 year old around to remind me how quickly the better comes — that makes it worse! I still can’t believe I have TWO, ONE year olds!

I totally get why you are sad. After one, comes two, and then even worse THREE! It’s a vicious cycle of growing up and it so totally sucks.

At least until they pitter-patter out of their beds in the middle of the night asking to snuggle with you because they had a bad dream…then, it’s totally worth it. (At least for me.)

I so know these snuggles, smells, cuddles, and loves. The pull of their independence against your wanting to keep them as your babies. They are so precious so as they grow, they will just know how much more they love you and you love them. Happy Birthday sweet peas!

And I so know this, ohmygod my baby is not a baby, where did the time go feeling. There may have been tears. And then smiles. And now he’s 2 and wants to cuddle up with me all the time (I think he knows there’s a baby on the way), I am soaking it all up. Regardless of what the husband is saying!

A dear friend of mine just had twin girls yesterday…yes yesterday! SO, I’m feeling the need to pass your blog onto her. I’m sure she won’t have much time to read it now BUT it’ll be there when she does. Happy Birthday to your babies. They’ll *always* be your babies. :)

They are so beautiful! I definitely get what you mean — my baby boy turned one three weeks ago, and I think especially because of the fact that I think he’s most likely my last baby, it’s so sad to be moving out of baby-ness and into toddlerhood. But it’s also fun to watch him toddling around and babbling. But he’s still my sweet baby boy and will cuddle with me. Happy birthday to your girls!
