Confession; I like country music. The sappier the better. I don’t know why but I like to make myself teary with a song. I’m also this way with commercials but the really good, sappy ones are so few and far between these days. I have no good friend that sits on this country bench with me and even my closest will giggle at such a statement.
Elizabeth over at Clarity in the Chaos just recently posted a video of one her favorite songs (hers is a Ben Folds song, much cooler than country, check it out here.) It got me thinking about songs and words and how a lot of my favorites are of the country genre. Sorry Dave Matthews, I love you, really I do. Really. But these songs just do it a little different for me. A small sampling of sap courtesy of moi…
Only A Dream by Mary Chapin Carpenter… makes me think of my little sister. She is six years younger than I am. We’ve always been in different phases of our lives. I’ve always felt like I could be a better sister but we don’t do well talking about our feelings in our family. I remember catching a glimpse of her face in the hallway as I loaded up the last of my things, heading to college. She looked so confused, not sure what her life would bring without me in the next room. I didn’t know what to say then and I don’t usually know what to say now. Maybe I should stick with it was all just a dream.

To Make You Feel My Love, Garth Brooks version… honestly nothing beats the Adele version, IMO. But it only makes me teary when I hear Garth sing it. The words are beautiful but have little to do with why it gets me. It reminds of the scene in Hope Floats where she’s dancing with her Daddy and for a moment he seems to make a connection with her and it’s exactly what she needs to find her balance. And THAT reminds me of my Grandpa John. My Evan is named after him. He meant that much to me.
The Good Stuff by Kenny Chesney… my husband and I were dancing to this when he asked me to marry him. I don’t even think that’s how he planned it, it just happened to come on — although I do think everything happens for a reason. This was kind of our theme song. We have that love, we are making that history. Neither of us can keep from grinning if we happen to catch it on the radio.
You’re Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins… I mean really, this is me, this is my fear, this is my life flying before my eyes. And some days (I pray it’s not most days) I can’t keep from wishing for the next thing to happen. I can’t wait to see what happens next to my children or my family, and by next I mean in 10 years, 20 years. On those days I miss it, I miss life. On those days it’s worth a tear or two and this song makes it happen every time.
Wish For You by Faith Hill… I heard this even before I had two girls and I loved it. Now I hear it and I have two girls and I cry. A sweet lullaby I can only imagine Faith herself sings for her girls. I could write this down in a card and seal it away for when my girls are older. LOVE.
Please don’t think less of me for my country in the closet love. Its just songs with words set to music, they just have a little twang every once in awhile. No harm in twang, right? Right?
**Disclaimer: I really do have more non-country music on my iTunes than country. Promise. Don’t judge.
**Disclaimer part deux: I tried to link you up in this post, just in case, you wanted to hear, see, read what the hell I was mammering on and on about. Hugs.

molly… I remember Joey and his cowboy boots but then always thought that when he met the hemp-wearing necklace love of his life that he moved on. I love that you are my person and I still get to find out new things about you!! Ironically I put the Faith Hill song on the recent CD I sent you but took it off at the last minute because I didn’t think you’d like the country ending! HA! XOXO

Now country is one genre about which I know nothing. Maybe I’ll have to check out your favorite songs and see what I think.
And today was the first time I heard that Ben Folds song, but I am a fan of his music, for sure.
Thanks for the link.
